Summary

Marti Peran is a critic and an art curator. He questions the types of art projects which are important in a public space. According to him the one’s that install a certain significance and also which explore different types of energies are most crucial. He believes that there are two ways to explore energies - one being a political artist and another of an operating artist. In the case of a political artist, the question without modifying conditions and whereas in the case of an operating artist they promote modifications to the subject and they are of a certain urgency or a necessity examples like works of Serigrafria and Santiago cirugeda. In a public space, there are two different life’s in a public space. Coming from a utopian origin to create a city as a peaceful place. To permit to make cartography and housing in precarious ways. Peran continues to the discussion of the formal energy and what how you can figure once the energy is stopped. He creates a distinction between collaborative practices and participation practices. Collaborative practice is one where different people on the combination of a certain set of work make new rules in a common space and something new is created. Whereas, in participation, practices are about dynamic projects that invite someone to participate without changing the rules. They work better informal dynamics. Working in a public space is to recognize, quantify problems. It is about creating interactions, creating relations. Public space is a transit area.

Critical Overview

He very critically defines the co-relations between public and private space. I too share the same opinion of the public space being complementary to the private space. Transiting from a private space to a public space creates such a different impact on an individual. It intrigued me how he described the movement around spaces. Also, the understanding of different types of practices and their detailed descriptions was intriguing. He spoke about the energies created by the spaces, this is something that I relate to and agree with. Each space creates energies and only when you defy the energy do you understand the limits of that energy. His ideas of going against the norms and defying the existing energy of the space to create a new one are very special and one to adapt. By not disrupting the existing energy he creates new energy that does justice to what is expected out of the space. His approach towards the space is indirect yet appropriate. He understands how space needs to be recognized, quantified and reacted to is being acquired.
